Simpson takes S1 KGP Crown !

The 2011 season has flown past and as the KGP drivers assembled at Whilton Mill for the finale of the S1. 28 KGP drivers lined up - a further increase in the KGP grid - an encouraging sign for the future.

Going into the last round at Whilton Mill, KGP Championship leader Michael Simpson missed all of Saturday as he was racing GT sportscars  at Silverstone. In his heat on sunday morning a first lap crash and a bent steering column put him out of his only heat so he would start final 1 from last position (28th).

Mark Litchfield (birel) caused a crash in the other heat depositing Jake Hughes (birel) off the track and suffered an exclusion for his actions. Litchfield however managed to win heat 2. ACR teammate Tom Fawcett (birel) dominated the first final, behind Simpson demonstrated his skill by coming through the field to 2nd and provided spectators with a classic drive. Simpson's result cemented his title going into final 2.

In final 2 Bobby Game (birel) had earlier taken second from James Gornall (intrepid), but they fell back to fourth and fifth whilst Litchfield was now up to sixth place.

Simpson eased past Gorman(maranello) and then sat comfortably behind Fawcett for a few laps before taking the lead. Litchfield kept up his progress by passing Fawcett and Gorman but he couldn't catch Simpson. With second place for Litchfield the Championship went to Simpson followed in 2nd by team mate Fawcett and Litchfield in the 3rd. In only his second year of karting, rookie Jake Hughes took an amazing 5th place in the Championship.

For the Birel marque 2011 has been a fantastic season with Birel chassis finishing 1st,2nd,3rd and 5th in the Formula KGP S1 championship.

The Birel 2011 s3 now makes way for the new 2012 Birel S4 version which features a new brake and axle configuration.
